Until recently, POI was considered rare, but new data show that this is not the case.
POI is common, underdiagnosed, and undertreated, and most women living with it are managed on evidence from an entirely different population.
The consequences are substantial: elevated risks of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, multimorbidity, depression, anxiety, sexual dysfunction and premature mortality, despite international guidelines and well-established hormone replacement therapy.
Up to 20% of women with POI in high-income healthcare systems wait for more than 4 years for a diagnosis.
Globally, an estimated 32+ million women with POI are not receiving appropriate care.
The average woman with POI waits years for a diagnosis, is frequently dismissed, and eventually receives care extrapolated from research in older menopausal populations.
